QUESTIONS
1. Define the meaning of ageing
population? Remember to include decreasing birth rates.
2. The HR (workforce plan) has four
components. Can you name them (RTAT)? Recruitment, Training, Appraisal, and Termination.
3. Canada is one of the richest
countries in the world. Its population grew at 0.94% last year. This was mainly
attributed to new immigrants. Canada faces a shortage of young professionals,
which might hinder future economic growth. Canada encourages and welcomes
selected immigration. Outline 2 constraints and 2 opportunities, from a
business perspective, of this situation. Constraints - 1) limited supply of high qualified professionals to support growth in Tertiary and Quaternary sectors - which constitute two important pillars of Canada's economy . And 2) increase in labor costs, which might reduce Canada's competitiveness worldwide. Opportunities - 1) greater workforce flexibility in terms of geographical mobility, as young professionals are able to adapt and move to different cities within Canada. And 2) a bigger domestic market for businesses where to sell products and services.

4. Answer Question 2.1.3 (page 115)
(a) This a very specific job and demands a very specific job description in order to comply with the needs of highly demanding clients. Otherwise you end up with a big pool of applicants, some of them incompetent, that makes your job cumbersome and tedious, and most probably not very effective. On the other hand, you don't want the advert to be too rigid and boring.
(b) I agree with many of the answers you gave, however, I think that the advert could be 1) more concrete (relevant and shorter), not as wordy and lengthy as it; and 2) should ask for qualifications (accurate), so you can limit the number of applicants. Remember to use TRAPs as a guide for job adverts.

5. Be a thinker – a new restaurant is
opening in your local town. It will sell expensive food cooked by a highly
trained and well known chef. The restaurant is advertising for waiters and
waitresses. Draw up a job description for this role, including detailed person
specification. Once you have finished, think about how you’d change the job
description to suit a busy fast food restaurant.
